Daily Light's Evening Reading

They said, . . . it is manna: for they wist not what it was.EXO. 16:15.

Without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh.—The bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.

Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. If any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. My flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.

The children of Israel . . . gathered, some more, some less. He that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack. They gathered it every morning, every man according to his eating.

Take no thought, saying, What shall we eat: or, What shall we drink? Your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Spurgeon's Evening Reading

“Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed.”

Jeremiah 17:14

“I have seen his ways, and will heal him.”

Isaiah 57:18

It is the sole prerogative of God to remove spiritual disease. Natural disease may be instrumentally healed by men, but even then the honour is to be given to God who giveth virtue unto medicine, and bestoweth power unto the human frame to cast off disease. As for spiritual sicknesses, these remain with the great Physician alone; he claims it as his prerogative, “I kill and I make alive, I wound and I heal;” and one of the Lord’s choice titles is Jehovah-Rophi, the Lord that healeth thee. “I will heal thee of thy wounds,” is a promise which could not come from the lip of man, but only from the mouth of the eternal God. On this account the psalmist cried unto the Lord, “O Lord, heal me, for my bones are sore vexed,” and again, “Heal my soul, for I have sinned against thee.” For this, also, the godly praise the name of the Lord, saying, “He healeth all our diseases.” He who made man can restore man; he who was at first the creator of our nature can new create it. What a transcendent comfort it is that in the person of Jesus “dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily!” My soul, whatever thy disease may be, this great Physician can heal thee. If he be God, there can be no limit to his power. Come then with the blind eye of darkened understanding, come with the limping foot of wasted energy, come with the maimed hand of weak faith, the fever of an angry temper, or the ague of shivering despondency, come just as thou art, for he who is God can certainly restore thee of thy plague. None shall restrain the healing virtue which proceeds from Jesus our Lord. Legions of devils have been made to own the power of the beloved Physician, and never once has he been baffled. All his patients have been cured in the past and shall be in the future, and thou shalt be one among them, my friend, if thou wilt but rest thyself in him this night.

Old Testament Chapter a Day - Joshua 20

Joshua 20

20. Cities of Refuge

The Cities of Refuge

20

Then the Lord spoke to Joshua, saying,2“Say to the Israelites, ‘Appoint the cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you through Moses,3so that anyone who kills a person without intent or by mistake may flee there; they shall be for you a refuge from the avenger of blood.4The slayer shall flee to one of these cities and shall stand at the entrance of the gate of the city, and explain the case to the elders of that city; then the fugitive shall be taken into the city, and given a place, and shall remain with them.5And if the avenger of blood is in pursuit, they shall not give up the slayer, because the neighbor was killed by mistake, there having been no enmity between them before.6The slayer shall remain in that city until there is a trial before the congregation, until the death of the one who is high priest at the time: then the slayer may return home, to the town in which the deed was done.’ ”

7 So they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali, and Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in the hill country of Judah.8And beyond the Jordan east of Jericho, they appointed Bezer in the wilderness on the tableland, from the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead, from the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan, from the tribe of Manasseh.9These were the cities designated for all the Israelites, and for the aliens residing among them, that anyone who killed a person without intent could flee there, so as not to die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until there was a trial before the congregation.

New Testament in Four Years - Galatians 2:14-16

Galatians 2:14-16

2. Paul Opposes Peter

14But when I saw that they were not acting consistently with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, “If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?”

Jews and Gentiles Are Saved by Faith

15 We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners;16yet we know that a person is justified not by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ. And we have come to believe in Christ Jesus, so that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by doing the works of the law, because no one will be justified by the works of the law.

Psalm a Day - Psalm 37:21-40

Psalm 37:21-40

37. Psalm 37

21

The wicked borrow, and do not pay back,

but the righteous are generous and keep giving;

22

for those blessed by the Lord shall inherit the land,

but those cursed by him shall be cut off.

23

Our steps are made firm by the Lord,

when he delights in our way;

24

though we stumble, we shall not fall headlong,

for the Lord holds us by the hand.

25

I have been young, and now am old,

yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken

or their children begging bread.

26

They are ever giving liberally and lending,

and their children become a blessing.

27

Depart from evil, and do good;

so you shall abide forever.

28

For the Lord loves justice;

he will not forsake his faithful ones.

The righteous shall be kept safe forever,

but the children of the wicked shall be cut off.

29

The righteous shall inherit the land,

and live in it forever.

30

The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom,

and their tongues speak justice.

31

The law of their God is in their hearts;

their steps do not slip.

32

The wicked watch for the righteous,

and seek to kill them.

33

The Lord will not abandon them to their power,

or let them be condemned when they are brought to trial.

34

Wait for the Lord, and keep to his way,

and he will exalt you to inherit the land;

you will look on the destruction of the wicked.

35

I have seen the wicked oppressing,

and towering like a cedar of Lebanon.

36

Again I passed by, and they were no more;

though I sought them, they could not be found.

37

Mark the blameless, and behold the upright,

for there is posterity for the peaceable.

38

But transgressors shall be altogether destroyed;

the posterity of the wicked shall be cut off.

39

The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;

he is their refuge in the time of trouble.

40

The Lord helps them and rescues them;

he rescues them from the wicked, and saves them,

because they take refuge in him.
