Daily Light's Morning Reading

Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.MATT. 6:10.

Bless the Lord, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word. Bless ye the Lord, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure.

I came down from heaven not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.—I delight to do thy will, O my God; yea, thy law is within my heart.—O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.—Not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.—If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.—To him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

Be not conformed to this world: but ye be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

Spurgeon's Morning Reading

“The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar; it shall never go out.”

Leviticus 6:13

Keep the altar of private prayer burning. This is the very life of all piety. The sanctuary and family altars borrow their fires here, therefore let this burn well. Secret devotion is the very essence, evidence, and barometer, of vital and experimental religion.

Burn here the fat of your sacrifices. Let your closet seasons be, if possible, regular, frequent, and undisturbed. Effectual prayer availeth much. Have you nothing to pray for? Let us suggest the Church, the ministry, your own soul, your children, your relations, your neighbours, your country, and the cause of God and truth throughout the world. Let us examine ourselves on this important matter. Do we engage with lukewarmness in private devotion? Is the fire of devotion burning dimly in our hearts? Do the chariot wheels drag heavily? If so, let us be alarmed at this sign of decay. Let us go with weeping, and ask for the Spirit of grace and of supplications. Let us set apart special seasons for extraordinary prayer. For if this fire should be smothered beneath the ashes of a worldly conformity, it will dim the fire on the family altar, and lessen our influence both in the Church and in the world.

The text will also apply to the altar of the heart. This is a golden altar indeed. God loves to see the hearts of his people glowing towards himself. Let us give to God our hearts, all blazing with love, and seek his grace, that the fire may never be quenched; for it will not burn if the Lord does not keep it burning. Many foes will attempt to extinguish it; but if the unseen hand behind the wall pour thereon the sacred oil, it will blaze higher and higher. Let us use texts of Scripture as fuel for our heart’s fire, they are live coals; let us attend sermons, but above all, let us be much alone with Jesus.

Old Testament Chapter a Day - Deuteronomy 8

Deuteronomy 8

8. Do Not Forget the Lord

A Warning Not to Forget God in Prosperity

 8

This entire commandment that I command you today you must diligently observe, so that you may live and increase, and go in and occupy the land that the Lord promised on oath to your ancestors.2Remember the long way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, in order to humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commandments.3He humbled you by letting you hunger, then by feeding you with manna, with which neither you nor your ancestors were acquainted, in order to make you understand that one does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.4The clothes on your back did not wear out and your feet did not swell these forty years.5Know then in your heart that as a parent disciplines a child so the Lord your God disciplines you.6Therefore keep the commandments of the Lord your God, by walking in his ways and by fearing him.7For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land with flowing streams, with springs and underground waters welling up in valleys and hills,8a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey,9a land where you may eat bread without scarcity, where you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron and from whose hills you may mine copper.10You shall eat your fill and bless the Lord your God for the good land that he has given you.

11 Take care that you do not forget the Lord your God, by failing to keep his commandments, his ordinances, and his statutes, which I am commanding you today.12When you have eaten your fill and have built fine houses and live in them,13and when your herds and flocks have multiplied, and your silver and gold is multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied,14then do not exalt yourself, forgetting the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery,15who led you through the great and terrible wilderness, an arid wasteland with poisonous snakes and scorpions. He made water flow for you from flint rock,16and fed you in the wilderness with manna that your ancestors did not know, to humble you and to test you, and in the end to do you good.17Do not say to yourself, “My power and the might of my own hand have gotten me this wealth.”18But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, so that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your ancestors, as he is doing today.19If you do forget the Lord your God and follow other gods to serve and worship them, I solemnly warn you today that you shall surely perish.20Like the nations that the Lord is destroying before you, so shall you perish, because you would not obey the voice of the Lord your God.

New Testament in Four Years - 2 Corinthians 3:7-11

2 Corinthians 3:7-11

3. Glory of the New Covenant

7 Now if the ministry of death, chiseled in letters on stone tablets, came in glory so that the people of Israel could not gaze at Moses’ face because of the glory of his face, a glory now set aside,8how much more will the ministry of the Spirit come in glory?9For if there was glory in the ministry of condemnation, much more does the ministry of justification abound in glory!10Indeed, what once had glory has lost its glory because of the greater glory;11for if what was set aside came through glory, much more has the permanent come in glory!

Psalm a Day - Psalm 147

Psalm 147

Praise for God’s Care for Jerusalem

1

Praise the Lord!

How good it is to sing praises to our God;

for he is gracious, and a song of praise is fitting.

2

The Lord builds up Jerusalem;

he gathers the outcasts of Israel.

3

He heals the brokenhearted,

and binds up their wounds.

4

He determines the number of the stars;

he gives to all of them their names.

5

Great is our Lord, and abundant in power;

his understanding is beyond measure.

6

The Lord lifts up the downtrodden;

he casts the wicked to the ground.

7

Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;

make melody to our God on the lyre.

8

He covers the heavens with clouds,

prepares rain for the earth,

makes grass grow on the hills.

9

He gives to the animals their food,

and to the young ravens when they cry.

10

His delight is not in the strength of the horse,

nor his pleasure in the speed of a runner;

11

but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him,

in those who hope in his steadfast love.

12

Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem!

Praise your God, O Zion!

13

For he strengthens the bars of your gates;

he blesses your children within you.

14

He grants peace within your borders;

he fills you with the finest of wheat.

15

He sends out his command to the earth;

his word runs swiftly.

16

He gives snow like wool;

he scatters frost like ashes.

17

He hurls down hail like crumbs—

who can stand before his cold?

18

He sends out his word, and melts them;

he makes his wind blow, and the waters flow.

19

He declares his word to Jacob,

his statutes and ordinances to Israel.

20

He has not dealt thus with any other nation;

they do not know his ordinances.

Praise the Lord!
