Daily Light's Morning Reading

I know that my Redeemer liveth.JOB 19:25.

If, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.—This man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

Because I live, ye shall live also.—If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.

The Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the Lord.—We have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.—Ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.

Spurgeon's Morning Reading

“Looking unto Jesus.”

Hebrews 12:2

It is ever the Holy Spirit’s work to turn our eyes away from self to Jesus; but Satan’s work is just the opposite of this, for he is constantly trying to make us regard ourselves instead of Christ. He insinuates, “Your sins are too great for pardon; you have no faith; you do not repent enough; you will never be able to continue to the end; you have not the joy of his children; you have such a wavering hold of Jesus.” All these are thoughts about self, and we shall never find comfort or assurance by looking within. But the Holy Spirit turns our eyes entirely away from self: he tells us that we are nothing, but that “Christ is all in all.” Remember, therefore, it is not thy hold of Christ that saves thee—it is Christ; it is not thy joy in Christ that saves thee—it is Christ; it is not even faith in Christ, though that be the instrument—it is Christ’s blood and merits; therefore, look not so much to thy hand with which thou art grasping Christ, as to Christ; look not to thy hope, but to Jesus, the source of thy hope; look not to thy faith, but to Jesus, the author and finisher of thy faith. We shall never find happiness by looking at our prayers, our doings, or our feelings; it is what Jesus is, not what we are, that gives rest to the soul. If we would at once overcome Satan and have peace with God, it must be by “looking unto Jesus.” Keep thine eye simply on him; let his death, his sufferings, his merits, his glories, his intercession, be fresh upon thy mind; when thou wakest in the morning look to him; when thou liest down at night look to him. Oh! let not thy hopes or fears come between thee and Jesus; follow hard after him, and he will never fail thee.

“My hope is built on nothing less

Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness:

I dare not trust the sweetest frame,

But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.”

Old Testament Chapter a Day - Numbers 27

Numbers 27

27. Joshua to Succeed Moses

The Daughters of Zelophehad

27

Then the daughters of Zelophehad came forward. Zelophehad was son of Hepher son of Gilead son of Machir son of Manasseh son of Joseph, a member of the Manassite clans. The names of his daughters were: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.2They stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders, and all the congregation, at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and they said,3“Our father died in the wilderness; he was not among the company of those who gathered themselves together against the Lord in the company of Korah, but died for his own sin; and he had no sons.4Why should the name of our father be taken away from his clan because he had no son? Give to us a possession among our father’s brothers.”

5 Moses brought their case before the Lord.6And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:7The daughters of Zelophehad are right in what they are saying; you shall indeed let them possess an inheritance among their father’s brothers and pass the inheritance of their father on to them.8You shall also say to the Israelites, “If a man dies, and has no son, then you shall pass his inheritance on to his daughter.9If he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers.10If he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father’s brothers.11And if his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to the nearest kinsman of his clan, and he shall possess it. It shall be for the Israelites a statute and ordinance, as the Lord commanded Moses.”

Joshua Appointed Moses’ Successor

12 The Lord said to Moses, “Go up this mountain of the Abarim range, and see the land that I have given to the Israelites.13When you have seen it, you also shall be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was,14because you rebelled against my word in the wilderness of Zin when the congregation quarreled with me. You did not show my holiness before their eyes at the waters.” (These are the waters of Meribath-kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.)15Moses spoke to the Lord, saying,16“Let the Lord, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint someone over the congregation17who shall go out before them and come in before them, who shall lead them out and bring them in, so that the congregation of the Lord may not be like sheep without a shepherd.”18So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay your hand upon him;19have him stand before Eleazar the priest and all the congregation, and commission him in their sight.20You shall give him some of your authority, so that all the congregation of the Israelites may obey.21But he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the decision of the Urim before the Lord; at his word they shall go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he and all the Israelites with him, the whole congregation.”22So Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation;23he laid his hands on him and commissioned him—as the Lord had directed through Moses.

New Testament in Four Years - 1 Corinthians 15:24-28

1 Corinthians 15:24-28

15. Resurrection of Christ and the Dead

24Then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father, after he has destroyed every ruler and every authority and power.25For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.26The last enemy to be destroyed is death.27For “God has put all things in subjection under his feet.” But when it says, “All things are put in subjection,” it is plain that this does not include the one who put all things in subjection under him.28When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to the one who put all things in subjection under him, so that God may be all in all.

Waiting for Divine Redemption

A Song of Ascents.

1

Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord.

2

Lord, hear my voice!

Let your ears be attentive

to the voice of my supplications!

3

If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities,

Lord, who could stand?

4

But there is forgiveness with you,

so that you may be revered.

5

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,

and in his word I hope;

6

my soul waits for the Lord

more than those who watch for the morning,

more than those who watch for the morning.

7

O Israel, hope in the Lord!

For with the Lord there is steadfast love,

and with him is great power to redeem.

8

It is he who will redeem Israel

from all its iniquities.
