Daily Light's Evening Reading

Enoch walked with God.GEN. 5:22.

Can two walk together, except they be agreed?

Having made peace through the blood of his cross . . . You, that were sometimes alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled in the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight.—In Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

If, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.

Spurgeon's Evening Reading

“Who is even at the right hand of God.”

Romans 8:34

He who was once despised and rejected of men, now occupies the honourable position of a beloved and honoured Son. The right hand of God is the place of majesty and favour. Our Lord Jesus is his people’s representative. When he died for them, they had rest; he rose again for them, they had liberty; when he sat down at his Father’s right hand, they had favour, and honour, and dignity. The raising and elevation of Christ is the elevation, the acceptance, and enshrinement, the glorifying of all his people, for he is their head and representative. This sitting at the right hand of God, then, is to be viewed as the acceptance of the person of the Surety, the reception of the Representative, and therefore, the acceptance of our souls. O saint, see in this thy sure freedom from condemnation. “Who is he that condemneth?” Who shall condemn the men who are in Jesus at the right hand of God?

The right hand is the place of power. Christ at the right hand of God hath all power in heaven and in earth. Who shall fight against the people who have such power vested in their Captain? O my soul, what can destroy thee if Omnipotence be thy helper? If the aegis of the Almighty cover thee, what sword can smite thee? Rest thou secure. If Jesus is thine all-prevailing King, and hath trodden thine enemies beneath his feet; if sin, death, and hell are all vanquished by him, and thou art represented in him, by no possibility canst thou be destroyed.

“Jesu’s tremendous name

Puts all our foes to flight:

Jesus, the meek, the angry Lamb,

A Lion is in fight.

“By all hell’s host withstood;

We all hell’s host o'erthrow;

And conquering them, through Jesu’s blood

We still to conquer go.”

Old Testament Chapter a Day - Exodus 27

Exodus 27

27. The Alter and Courtyard

The Altar of Burnt Offering

27

You shall make the altar of acacia wood, five cubits long and five cubits wide; the altar shall be square, and it shall be three cubits high.2You shall make horns for it on its four corners; its horns shall be of one piece with it, and you shall overlay it with bronze.3You shall make pots for it to receive its ashes, and shovels and basins and forks and firepans; you shall make all its utensils of bronze.4You shall also make for it a grating, a network of bronze; and on the net you shall make four bronze rings at its four corners.5You shall set it under the ledge of the altar so that the net shall extend halfway down the altar.6You shall make poles for the altar, poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with bronze;7the poles shall be put through the rings, so that the poles shall be on the two sides of the altar when it is carried.8You shall make it hollow, with boards. They shall be made just as you were shown on the mountain.

The Court and Its Hangings

9 You shall make the court of the tabernacle. On the south side the court shall have hangings of fine twisted linen one hundred cubits long for that side;10its twenty pillars and their twenty bases shall be of bronze, but the hooks of the pillars and their bands shall be of silver.11Likewise for its length on the north side there shall be hangings one hundred cubits long, their pillars twenty and their bases twenty, of bronze, but the hooks of the pillars and their bands shall be of silver.12For the width of the court on the west side there shall be fifty cubits of hangings, with ten pillars and ten bases.13The width of the court on the front to the east shall be fifty cubits.14There shall be fifteen cubits of hangings on the one side, with three pillars and three bases.15There shall be fifteen cubits of hangings on the other side, with three pillars and three bases.16For the gate of the court there shall be a screen twenty cubits long, of blue, purple, and crimson yarns, and of fine twisted linen, embroidered with needlework; it shall have four pillars and with them four bases.17All the pillars around the court shall be banded with silver; their hooks shall be of silver, and their bases of bronze.18The length of the court shall be one hundred cubits, the width fifty, and the height five cubits, with hangings of fine twisted linen and bases of bronze.19All the utensils of the tabernacle for every use, and all its pegs and all the pegs of the court, shall be of bronze.

The Oil for the Lamp

20 You shall further command the Israelites to bring you pure oil of beaten olives for the light, so that a lamp may be set up to burn regularly.21In the tent of meeting, outside the curtain that is before the covenant, Aaron and his sons shall tend it from evening to morning before the Lord. It shall be a perpetual ordinance to be observed throughout their generations by the Israelites.

Psalm a Day - Psalm 83

Psalm 83

83. Psalm 83

Psalm 83

Prayer for Judgment on Israel’s Foes

A Song. A Psalm of Asaph.

1

O God, do not keep silence;

do not hold your peace or be still, O God!

2

Even now your enemies are in tumult;

those who hate you have raised their heads.

3

They lay crafty plans against your people;

they consult together against those you protect.

4

They say, “Come, let us wipe them out as a nation;

let the name of Israel be remembered no more.”

5

They conspire with one accord;

against you they make a covenant—

6

the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites,

Moab and the Hagrites,

7

Gebal and Ammon and Amalek,

Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;

8

Assyria also has joined them;

they are the strong arm of the children of Lot.Selah

9

Do to them as you did to Midian,

as to Sisera and Jabin at the Wadi Kishon,

10

who were destroyed at En-dor,

who became dung for the ground.

11

Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb,

all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna,

12

who said, “Let us take the pastures of God

for our own possession.”

13

O my God, make them like whirling dust,

like chaff before the wind.

14

As fire consumes the forest,

as the flame sets the mountains ablaze,

15

so pursue them with your tempest

and terrify them with your hurricane.

16

Fill their faces with shame,

so that they may seek your name, O Lord.

17

Let them be put to shame and dismayed forever;

let them perish in disgrace.

18

Let them know that you alone,

whose name is the Lord,

are the Most High over all the earth.
