10. The Table of Nations

Nations Descended from Noah

10

These are the descendants of Noah’s sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth; children were born to them after the flood.

² The descendants of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras.³The descendants of Gomer: Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah.⁴The descendants of Javan: Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Rodanim.⁵From these the coastland peoples spread. These are the descendants of Japheth in their lands, with their own language, by their families, in their nations.

⁶ The descendants of Ham: Cush, Egypt, Put, and Canaan.⁷The descendants of Cush: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The descendants of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan.⁸Cush became the father of Nimrod; he was the first on earth to become a mighty warrior.⁹He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the Lord.”¹⁰The beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, and Accad, all of them in the land of Shinar.¹¹From that land he went into Assyria, and built Nineveh, Rehoboth-ir, Calah, and¹²Resen between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city.¹³Egypt became the father of Ludim, Anamim, Lehabim, Naphtuhim,¹⁴Pathrusim, Casluhim, and Caphtorim, from which the Philistines come.

¹⁵ Canaan became the father of Sidon his firstborn, and Heth,¹⁶and the Jebusites, the Amorites, the Girgashites,¹⁷the Hivites, the Arkites, the Sinites,¹⁸the Arvadites, the Zemarites, and the Hamathites. Afterward the families of the Canaanites spread abroad.¹⁹And the territory of the Canaanites extended from Sidon, in the direction of Gerar, as far as Gaza, and in the direction of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha.²⁰These are the descendants of Ham, by their families, their languages, their lands, and their nations.

²¹ To Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the elder brother of Japheth, children were born.²²The descendants of Shem: Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud, and Aram.²³The descendants of Aram: Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash.²⁴Arpachshad became the father of Shelah; and Shelah became the father of Eber.²⁵To Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided, and his brother’s name was Joktan.²⁶Joktan became the father of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah,²⁷Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah,²⁸Obal, Abimael, Sheba,²⁹Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab; all these were the descendants of Joktan.³⁰The territory in which they lived extended from Mesha in the direction of Sephar, the hill country of the east.³¹These are the descendants of Shem, by their families, their languages, their lands, and their nations.

³² These are the families of Noah’s sons, according to their genealogies, in their nations; and from these the nations spread abroad on the earth after the flood.

Romans 4:18-25

4. Abraham Justified by Faith

¹⁸Hoping against hope, he believed that he would become “the father of many nations,” according to what was said, “So numerous shall your descendants be.”¹⁹He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was already as good as dead (for he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb.²⁰No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God,²¹being fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.²²Therefore his faith “was reckoned to him as righteousness.”²³Now the words, “it was reckoned to him,” were written not for his sake alone,²⁴but for ours also. It will be reckoned to us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead,²⁵who was handed over to death for our trespasses and was raised for our justification.

Prayer for Guidance and for Deliverance

Of David.

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.

2

O my God, in you I trust;

do not let me be put to shame;

do not let my enemies exult over me.

3

Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame;

let them be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.

 

4

Make me to know your ways, O Lord;

teach me your paths.

5

Lead me in your truth, and teach me,

for you are the God of my salvation;

for you I wait all day long.

 

6

Be mindful of your mercy, O Lord, and of your steadfast love,

for they have been from of old.

7

Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions;

according to your steadfast love remember me,

for your goodness’ sake, O Lord!

 

8

Good and upright is the Lord;

therefore he instructs sinners in the way.

9

He leads the humble in what is right,

and teaches the humble his way.

10

All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness,

for those who keep his covenant and his decrees.

 

11

For your name’s sake, O Lord,

pardon my guilt, for it is great.

12

Who are they that fear the Lord?

He will teach them the way that they should choose.

 

13

They will abide in prosperity,

and their children shall possess the land.

14

The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him,

and he makes his covenant known to them.

15

My eyes are ever toward the Lord,

for he will pluck my feet out of the net.

 

16

Turn to me and be gracious to me,

for I am lonely and afflicted.

17

Relieve the troubles of my heart,

and bring me out of my distress.

18

Consider my affliction and my trouble,

and forgive all my sins.

 

19

Consider how many are my foes,

and with what violent hatred they hate me.

20

O guard my life, and deliver me;

do not let me be put to shame, for I take refuge in you.

21

May integrity and uprightness preserve me,

for I wait for you.

 

22

Redeem Israel, O God,

out of all its troubles.
