Biography

Friedrich von Hügel was born in 1852 in Italy but became a British citizen in 1914. As a devout Roman Catholic, he accepted the authority of the Pope but believed the governing of the church should be decentralized. While he was not a modernist, he did listen to their ideas and tried to open up dialogue between opposing theological sides. Friedrich’s scholarship led him to discuss and write about relationships between ideas such as free will and church control. Friedrich died at the age of 72 on January 27, 1925.
