Born in 1799, Upham would wear many mantels throughout his life, including philosopher, psychologist, poet, professor, and author. Mental Philosophy is one of his more renowned works. As a pacifist and abolitionist, Upham wanted all of society to live in harmony. He wrote The Manual of Peace. Upham wrote several hymns. Having suffered a stroke, Upham passed away in 1872. His last words were,"My soul…is with God."
