Biography

Alexis de Tocqueville was born in Paris on July 29, 1805. His four-volume work, Democracy in America, was a defining review of American governance and culture of the 1800s. Alexis lived through the French Revolution of 1848. Alexis railed against class divisions and promoted liberty, and suffered political persecution by those in power. His work as a diplomat, historian, and philosopher impacted his world and continues to be reviewed today. Tocqueville died in 1859 while in Cannes, France.
