Biography

James Henley Thornwell is in the news more than 150 years after his death in 1862. Born in 1812 in South Carolina, Thornwell was a minister in the Presbyterian Church and authored religious books and articles. He also taught classes for South Carolina College (which became the University of South Carolina) and was the college president. One of the buildings on campus bears his name. As a “Southerner,” Thornwell defended slavery and in fact owned slaves himself. Hence there are some who in 2021 recommended that his name be removed from the campus building. His leadership was crucial in starting the Presbyterian Church in the South. In his heart, Thornwell yearned for a society that was united in purpose and collectively God fearing.
