Doctrinal Theology
by Heinrich Schmid
Summary
Schmid's text is not so much a systematic theology, but rather a compilation of
theological statements from fourteen prominent Lutheran theologians of the sixteenth
and seventeenth century. The words of such theologians as Philip Melanchthon, Martin
Chemnitz, Nicholas Selnecker, and several others are included. Schmid's collection of
texts ranges from Lutheran liturgies to treatises used by universities. When read together,
these texts offer up a detailed historical picture of Lutheranism's development as a
community of thought and practice. Schmid includes short biographical and occupational
sketches of each cited theologian in an appendix to guide the reader.
