Biography

Samuel Hopkins was born in Connecticut in 1721. He became a preacher after attending both Yale and Northampton. His theology included practical applications of the gospel through social justice issues. He coined the phrase"disinterested benevolence" to connect his passion for theology and the abolition of slavery. So powerful were his writings and speeches that Harriet Beecher Stowe made him a character in one of her books. At the age of 82, Hopkin passed away in Newport, Rhode Island.
