Biography

Christina Rossetti is best known for her poetry. Her father was a politically persecuted poet in Italy before he was exiled to England. Christina and her siblings were all accomplished in their own rites. Her family switched from practicing Evangelicals to Anglo-Catholic. Her grandfather published Rossetti's first book of poetry. She would complete numerous other works for publication. Goblin Market and Other Poems (1862). Much of her poetry was meant to be devotional. Even though readers of her poetry find feministic ideas in the verses, Rossetti was not an ardent feminist. She was, however, an abolitionist and worked to end the human trafficking of young girls for prostitution. Collecting postage stamps was one of her hobbies, which she began shortly after stamps began being issued. Rossetti lived from 1830 to 1894.
