Biography

Gregory of Nyssa was born around 335 AD in Niksar (Turkey). He was the Bishop of Cappadocia as well as one of the three Cappadocian Fathers. Gregory developed beliefs in several strains of thought. He was a Mystic, Trinitarian, and a Neoplatonist. Greatly influenced by the teachings of Origen, Gregory believed that all humans would be saved (Universal Salvation). Gregory was against slavery. He saw each person as a creation of God; belonging to God therefore one human being could not own or sell another human being. Gregory’s influence is apparent in the Nicene Creed. Many of Gregory’s writings have been collected and published. Gregory died in 395.
