Biography

Poet and mystic Mechthild of Magdeburg was born around the year 1207. At an early age, she began having experiences with the Holy Ghost. She dedicated her life to piety, prayer, and mortification. She took vows but lived in general society for part of her life. The last years of her life were spent in a convent. The year of her death is unclear, but many have settled on 1282. Her legacy is clear, which is comprised of a seven-volume work called The Flowing Light of Divinity. These books poetically detail her mystic experiences as well as criticize church leaders for their failures.
