Day Boy and the Night Girl

by George MacDonald

This fairy tale was originally a serial story written by George MacDonald. It was published as a novel in 1882. The story has three main characters. One is Watho, a witch, who conducts a social experiment on two children, Photogen and Nycteris. One in kept from experiencing darkness while the other is kept in the dark except for one small lamp. Of course the two children meet and have to survive the day and night by leaning on each other which is just one of the themes MacDonald develops in this book and that is companionship.
