Smalcald Articles

by Martin Luther

Summary

The Smalcald Articles (aka Schmalkald Articles) were written and submitted by Martin Luther in lieu of his attendance at the Schmalkaldic League's meeting. At the time of the meeting, Luther was suffering from kidney stones. Luther wrote the basic tenets of the Reformation, beginning with justification by faith in Christ alone. From there, Luther went on to outline other important teachings. While the League did not adopt Luther's articles, the articles were regarded with authority in the years to come.
