Biography

Bishop John Kaye served as Bishop of Bristol and then Bishop of Lincoln. A life begun in 1783 was dedicated to building Christ’s church in multiple ways. He literally had a church built in Riseholme. He encouraged regular church attendance and tightened up the requirements for becoming an Anglican clergy member. At a time when traditional Catholic practices were regaining popularity, Kaye leaned hard into Evangelicalism, arguing against the “old” practices. Kaye wrote works regarding Justin Martyr, Clement, and Athanasius. Several sermons and lectures of Bishop Kaye were published also. Buried in the St. Mary’s church yard (the church he had built), Kaye died in 1853.
