Biography

Rufus Matthew Jones was born into a Quaker family in January 1863. His early years are described in Finding the Trail of Life. He would become an influential voice for the Quakers and remain so for several decades. Mysticism and the Inner Light is one of Jones’s works that impacted the Quakers' way of thinking about and practicing their faith. Other works by Jones include Spiritual Energies in Daily Life, The Inner Life, and Studies in Mystical Religion. Jones was a humanitarian. He worked on creating a path for “conscientious objectors” to avoid military combat and he produced a handbook for atheists; Atheism: A Guide for the Perplexed. Jones died in Haverford, Pennsylvania, on June 16, 1948.
