Biography

Hugh of Saint Victor was born around 1096 in Germany. He joined the monastery of Hamersleben but due to political unrest, moved to Paris, France where he continued to study and write. And write he did. Greatly influenced by St. Augustine, Hugh produced a large body of works. This mystic’s writings cover a variety of topics including science, theology, philosophy, and scholasticism. Hugh died in Paris in 1141. His legacy includes the Sacraments of the Christian Faith, On the Study of Reading, Commentary on the Celestial Hierarchy, and many commentaries on books of the Bible.
