Biography

Hermas was a freedman living in Rome during the second century. His holy living was noted by those who knew him and knew of him. Hermas' brother, Pius, was the Bishop of Rome. The allegory, The Shepherd of Hermas, is thought by many to have been written by Hermas. In the history of the church, early on, The Shepherd of Hermas was at times considered canonical.
