Biography

The Scarlet Letter writer, Nathaniel Hawthorne, was born in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1804. Hawthorne attended Bowdoin College. Hawthorne held a surveyor job for a few years but lost it due to political policies. He was able to focus on writing and produced several short stories. Hawthorne relocated to Lenox, where the grandeur of the mountains inspired the writing of The House of Seven Gables. Hawthorne died on May 19, 1864, at the age of 59.
