What I Saw in America

by Gilbert Keith Chesterton

Summary

What I Saw in America (1922) by English Christian apologist Gilbert Keith (G.K.) Chesterton is his account of the expectations and realities of visiting America. His “thesis” is that the two cultures (American and English) can best appreciate each other if they remain separate rather than comingled. The book begins with a lengthy answer to the question, “What is America?” The book goes on to give perspective on many topics such as “Presidents and Problems”, “Fads and Public Opinion”, “Cities”, “Country,” and the “Extraordinary American.”. After getting back to his thesis with individual chapters on the “The Spirit of America” and the “Spirit of England”, Chesterton gives his opinion on the democracy’s future.
