Biography

Martin Buber explored many aspects of the human mind and relationships. Born in 1878, his time with his parents was short-lived. At an early age, they separated, and Martin went to live with his grandparents. In his twenties, Buber studied various Jewish texts. His writings and his philosophical thought were that of a"utopian Zionist." Buber moved to Palestine and taught at Hebrew University as a professor of philosophy. His most classic work, I and Thou (1923), explores the relationships people have with God and each other as well as the world around them. He breaks down human existence into"I-Thou" moments and"I-It" moments. It is a book that has brought much acclaim and criticism. Another of Buber's lasting legacies is his translation of the Hebrew Scriptures into German. Martin Buber died in Jerusalem in 1965.
