John Albert Broadus was born in Virginia on January 24, 1827. Homeschooled in his early years, he would attend the University of Virginia for his undergraduate schooling. At the age of 23 Broadus was ordained in the Baptist church. Nine years later he and others would establish the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He would serve as a professor and as president at the seminary. Chaplain Broadus ministered to the spiritual needs of General Lee’s army during the Civil War. Broadus wrote many books about preparing sermons and preaching. Both Charles Spurgeon and Albert Newman praised Broadus’ preaching skills. He also wrote commentaries on Mark and Matthew.
