Biography

Donald Macpherson (D.M.) Baillie was born in Scotland in 1887. When Baillie was three, his father died. Raised by his mother, she made sure he was well educated along with his two brothers. Baillie excelled in metaphysics, moral philosophy, and English verse. Focusing on biblical studies and theology, Baillie completed the educational requirements to enter the ministry. He served several churches, including North Morningside Church, Boswell's Church, St. John's Church, and St. Andrews. He even was a Y.M.C.A. volunteer, but poor health then and throughout the rest of his life caused him to leave his volunteer position at the Y. Additionally, Baillie suffered episodes of deep depression and spiritual torment. In the span of his career, Baillie preached over 650 sermons and published several theological works, the most often referenced being his essay, God Was In Christ, which expounded upon the topics of incarnation and atonement. Baillie was a champion for social justice and Christian unity. In October of 1954, Baillie died of emphysema at the age of 67. His death was a loss to the leadership of the church, the students under his tutelage, the world in general, and Scotland specifically.
