Biography

Gustaf Emanuel Hildebrand Aulén was born in Sweden in 1879. Following in his father's footsteps, Aulén became a theologian and eventually a Bishop in the Church of Sweden. Writing was one of his passions. Not only did he write theological books, including Christus Victor: A Historical Study of the Three Main Types of the Idea of Atonement and Reformation and Catholicity, but he also wrote many hymns. For several years, he presided over the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. At 96, Aulén published My Ninety-six Years: Happenings and Thoughts, which was his autobiography. He died two years later at the age of 98.
