Biography

Francis Asbury was born in England in 1745. At the age of 22, Asbury traveled to the English colonies on the North American Atlantic coast as a lay pastor in various Methodist churches, being mentored by John Wesley. Asbury remained in America during the Revolutionary War period. While a humble man, Asbury also suffered from bouts of depression. Asbury developed a reputation as an excellent preacher, even a"great" preacher. He woke up early every morning to read the scriptures and made the best use of the time he was given. Asbury died in 1816 while on a preaching journey through Virginia and Pennsylvania. He left behind Journals and letters that fill three volumes.
