Biography

Francis Asbury was born in England in 1745. At the age of 22, Asbury traveled to the English colonies on the North American Atlantic coast as a lay pastor in various Methodist churches being mentored by John Wesley. Asbury remained in America during the Revolutionary War period. While a humble man, Asbury also suffered from bouts of depression. Asbury developed a reputation as an excellent preacher even a “great” preacher. He woke up early every morning to read the scriptures and made the best use of the time he was given. Asbury died in 1816 while on a preaching journey through Virginia and Pennsylvania. He left behind Journals and letters that fill three volumes.
