On Cleaving to God
by Albert the Great
Summary
St. Albert the Great is one of only thirty-five persons whom the Catholic Church has
named a Doctor of the Church, a title awarded to the foremost Christian scholars. In
this treatise, St. Albert meditates upon the nature of God's love and how Christians
should respond to that love. He situates every piece of practical advice within an intricate
overarching theological narrative, tying in the everyday actions of individuals with
God's entire plan for humanity and all creation. Although the treatise's authorship is
typically attributed to him, Albert very likely did not write some of it. Instead, later
authors and commentators probably added to his more concise original.
