John, and followed Jesus, was Andrew the [10] brother of Simon.  ³⁸⁸³⁸⁸    John i. 41a.And he saw first Simon his brother, and said unto him, We have [11] found the Messiah.  ³⁸⁹³⁸⁹    John i. 42a.And he brought him unto Jesus.  And Jesus looked upon him and said, Thou art Simon, son of Jonah:  thou shalt be called Cephas.³⁹⁰³⁹⁰    The Arabic word used throughout this work means Stones.

[12] ³⁹¹³⁹¹    John i. 43.And on the next day Jesus desired to go forth to Galilee, and he found Philip, [13] [Arabic, p. 19] and said unto him, Follow me.  ³⁹²³⁹²    John i. 44.Now Philip was of Bethsaida, of the city [14] of Andrew and Simon.  ³⁹³³⁹³    John i. 45.And Philip found Nathanael, and said unto him, He of whom Moses did write in the law and in the prophets, we have found that [15] he is Jesus the son of Joseph of Nazareth.  ³⁹⁴³⁹⁴    John i. 46.Nathanael said unto him, Is it possible 51that there can be any good thing from Nazareth?  Philip said unto him, Come and [16] see.  ³⁹⁵³⁹⁵    John i. 47.And Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said of him, This is indeed a³⁹⁶³⁹⁶    Lit. the (cf. note to § 1, 40). [17] son of Israel in whom is no guile.  ³⁹⁷³⁹⁷    John i. 48.And Nathanael said unto him, Whence knowest thou me?  Jesus said unto him, Before Philip called thee, while thou wast under the [18] fig tree, I saw thee.  ³⁹⁸³⁹⁸    John i. 49.Nathanael answered and said unto him, My Master, thou art [19] the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.  ³⁹⁹³⁹⁹    John i. 50.Jesus said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, hast thou believed? thou shalt see what is [20] greater than this.  ⁴⁰⁰⁴⁰⁰    John i. 51.And he said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Henceforth ye shall see the heavens opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

And they did so.  ⁴¹³⁴¹³    John ii. 9.And when the ruler of the company tasted that water which had become wine, and knew not whence it was (but the servants knew, because they filled up the water), the ruler of the company called [31] the bridegroom, ⁴¹⁴⁴¹⁴    John ii. 10.and said unto him, Every man presenteth first the good wine, and on intoxication he bringeth what is poor; but thou hast kept the good wine until [32] now.  ⁴¹⁵⁴¹⁵    John ii. 11.And this is the first sign⁴¹⁶⁴¹⁶    Perhaps a comma should be inserted after sign. which Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested [33] his glory; and his disciples believed on him.  ⁴¹⁷⁴¹⁷    Luke iv. 14b.And his fame spread in all the country [34] which was around them.  ⁴¹⁸⁴¹⁸    Luke iv. 15.And he taught in their synagogues, and was glorified [35] by⁴¹⁹⁴¹⁹    If the text does not contain a misprint the word for by is wanting in both mss.  It should doubtless be restored as in § 7, 3. every man.  ⁴²⁰⁴²⁰    Luke iv. 16.And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and entered, according to his custom, into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood [36] up to read.  ⁴²¹⁴²¹    Luke iv. 17.And he was given the book of Isaiah the prophet.  And Jesus opened the book and found the place where it was written,

And to proclaim forgiveness to the evil-doers,⁴²³⁴²³    Evil-doers could easily be an Arabic copyist’s corruption of captives; but the word used here for forgiveness could hardly spring from an Arabic release (in Ibn-at-Tayyib’s Commentary, where the thing seems to have happened, a different word is used).  In Syriac, however, they are the same; while the first pair contain the same consonants. and sight to the blind,

52[49] ⁴³⁶⁴³⁶    Luke v. 1.And when the multitude gathered unto him to hear the word of God, while he [50] was standing on the shore of the sea of Gennesaret, ⁴³⁷⁴³⁷    Luke v. 2.he saw two boats standing beside the sea, while⁴³⁸⁴³⁸    Or, but. the two fishers which were gone out of them were washing their [51] nets.  ⁴³⁹⁴³⁹    Luke v. 3.And one of them belonged to Simon Cephas.  And Jesus went up and sat down in it, and commanded that they should move away a little from the land into [52] the water.  And he sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.  ⁴⁴⁰⁴⁴⁰    Luke v. 4.And when he had left off his speaking, he said unto Simon, Put out into the deep, and cast your [53] net for a draught.  ⁴⁴¹⁴⁴¹    Luke v. 5.And Simon answered and said unto him, My Master, we toiled [54] all night and caught nothing; now⁴⁴²⁴⁴²    Borg. ms. has but.  The Arabic expressions are very similar. at thy word I will cast the net.  ⁴⁴³⁴⁴³    Luke v. 6.And when they did this, there were enclosed⁴⁴⁴⁴⁴⁴    Borg. ms. has he did this, he enclosed, on which see § 38, 43, note (end).  Either reading could spring from the other, within the Arabic. a great many fishes; and their net was on the [55] point of breaking.  ⁴⁴⁵⁴⁴⁵    Luke v. 7.And they beckoned to their comrades that were in the other boat, to come and help them.  And when they came, they filled both boats, so that they were on the point of sinking.
