Moultrie, Gerard, a clergyman of the Church of England, was born September 16, 1829, in the Rugby rectory, of which his father, Rev. John Moultrie (also a hymn writer of note), was incumbent. He was educated at Rugby and Oxford, whence he received both the B.A. (1851) and M.A. (1856) degrees. He filled various clerical offices in the Church of England. He died April 25, 1885. Among his published volumes are the following: Hymns and Lyrics for the Seasons and Saints' Days of the Church, 1867, and Cantica Sanctorum; or, Hymns for the Black Letter Saints' Days in the English and Scottish Calendars, 1880. His hymns include translations from 428 the Latin, Greek, and German. About fifty of his hymns are found in different Church hymnals.
