- A long, as in May, day, navy, came, main.
- E short, as in men, Ned, wed, enemy.
- EE long, as in deem, heed, seen, see.
- I short, as in sin, pin, tin, in.
- O short, as in on, top, sod, yonder.
- OO long, as in noon, moon, spoon.
- U short as in tun, sun, under, number.
- Y has the same sound as in English—as in yonder, way.
