MORNING HYMN.

My voice shalt thou hear betimes, O Lord: early in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee.

Psa. v. 3.

Christian Ludwig Edeling. Died 1742.

Frances E. Cox. Tr. 1841

My Saviour! make me cleave to Thee,

And close with Thee unite me;

And let thy word the lantern be,

Which on the way shall light me:

Oh! wean my heart from joys of sense,

And let not, through self-confidence,

My foe unguarded find me

And with the world fast bind me.

Oh! bless me, Lord, in every place,

Each hour thine aid bestowing,

And let thine overruling grace

Still guide me in my going:

Yea, think and act thyself in me,

And grant that I, good Lord, to Thee

My every word referring,

May thus be kept from erring.

Oh! let thy gifts be freely sent,

Far as the clouds are reaching;

Let house, and church, and government

Be ordered by thy teaching:

Let Christian men thy peace revere;

In unity and godly fear

Let all lands serve before Thee,

And let the world adore Thee.

The friends that I so dearly love,

Adopt them, Lord, and bless them;

All evil far from them remove,

And let the thought possess them,

‘How soon this world shall pass away!’

And make them meet in that great day,

To stand, thy sentence hearing,

When all is disappearing.

Lord! hear the cry I raise to Thee,

And let it come before Thee;

And make me full of faith to be,

In songs when I adore Thee.

Lord, I believe; do Thou dispense

In thy true light more confidence,

That I with joy may see it;

Amen, good Lord, so be it!
