After three days of mind-numbing all-day forget-to-eat-lunch
programming and data entry, CCELng is now in business. The new
interface is in place, with indexes generated by perl scripts.
Acquiring a book is a matter of running an "acquire" script and typing
in a few bits of information. The script adds the relevant info to
the database and optionally mirrors the book on the CCEL server.
Now that there are separate "classics" and "all" lists, I'll probably add books a bit more freely, without worrying as much whether they are classics. That together with "acquire" may mean somewhat faster acquisitions in the future.
I struggled with (and even lost sleep over!) finding a balance between simplicity of use and enough different options in selecting what books you want to see. (I was thrilled when I finally figured out how to keep the number of options small enough that forms/javascript/php programs weren't needed.) I ended up with Classics (by author), All (by author), All (by title), and the other categories you see listed. Are there any additional categories that would be useful? Or some that could be dropped?
- Added the
Christian Classics Ethereal Hymnary, a work in progress by Stephen Hutcheson. It contains hundreds of indexed hymns, midi files, sheet music, and Noteworthy Composer files. - Volunteer work on the digital facsimile edition of Whyte's

- Added a mostly-completed
digital facsimile edition of The Work of the Holy Spirit by Abraham Kuyper. Still needs proofreading. To find it, open the Table of Contents and click on the "About this book" link. Look at the links near the bottom.

Theological Markup Language and from there to HTML webs. I've
converted two books:
- Added David Elginbrod,
HTML [3360k], RTF [1188k], by George MacDonald, contributed by John Bechard. (Oooh, those nasty HTML files that Word 2000 emits! I'll have to clean it up some time.) - Added Volume 1 of Gurnall's
A Treatise of the Whole Armour of God, contributed by Steve Balke. I'll create an index page etc. when the remainder of the work is available.
The Distinguishing Marks of a Work of the Spirit of God, by Jonathan Edwards, has been proofread (part of the Edwards' Works project). - Added another section (
The Present Moment) from Kierkegaard's Selections - Added

- Added The God of All Comfort by HW Smith,

- Added most of the remaining sections of
The Complete Poetical Works of William Cowper. Not included are Cowper's translations of the works of Milton, Virgil, Ovid, Horace, Homer, Owen, and misc. Greek authors as they were primarily in praise of pagan gods.
- Added another section from
Selections from the Writings of Kierkegaard, tr. L.M. Hollander, digitized by Joseph Perry. Added a page for the whole book and changed the link to the previous section so that it is now a part of the book. More parts to come.

- Still have nasty problems with linux crashing every few days.
- Has anyone noticed that this fancy new ISO date format, 1999-08-01, is going to have a serious y10k problem?
- The transition to Calvin University is making good progress.
- All files (hopefully) have been transferred from the Wheaton server
- A new
Search Engine has bee installed -- htdig -- and it seems much better than Excite had been. A little slow when there are lots of hits, perhaps. - Early crashing problems have been resolved and the server seems much more stable -- though I did have one crash when trying to index a CD-ROM with the htdig search engine.
- FTP access should be working
- Theoretically, accesses should be faster, with a faster server and a faster internet connection here at Calvin. Anyone notice a difference?
-
I have moved to Calvin University in Grand Rapids, MI, and the CCEL
has moved along with me. The new URL is ccel.org or www.ccel.org,
though the old URL of ccel.wheaton.edu should continue to work.
The server at Calvin University is being used, though no doubt it will
take me some time to get the bugs all worked out. FTP access and
searching are not working yet.

- Added a preliminary version of
Calvin's Commentaries, complete. This edition needs further work and is subject to change. It is a result of the joint efforts of volunteers for the CCEL and the OnLine Bible project and the good folks at Ages Software. The files currently on line are HTML exported from Word 2000 and modified with a perl program to remove some of the ms-specific extensions to HTML. The files are large, averaging around 1MB and topping out at over 2MB. Skip Gaeda and Bruce Lambert are working on conversion to ThML and thence to OnLine Bible format. If you are interested in helping out, let me know.

- Added one-file HTML editions of Andrew Murray's
The Lord's Table and F. B. Meyer's The Secret of Guidance. These are exported in HTML format directly from Word 2000. Take a look at the HTML that Word 2000 generates -- it captures everything in the word file! I think I'll start archiving these HTML files rather than RTF files, since everything in the RTF file is in the HTML file. I do plan to format these and other books in ThML, though, so we can make multiple file versions and have the other features offered by ThML.
- Added to the
more books list: Luther on the Eve of His Revolt by M. J. Lagrange, tr. W. S. Reilly
- Added Deuteronomy of the (uncondensed) Matthew Henry Commentary, being prepared by Ernie Stefanik.

Please give me feedback on the HTML that has been generated, as the program that generates HTML is still under development. - Added an alternate version of Thomas a Kempis'
