Biography

Matthew Mead was born around 1630 in England. Educated at King's College, he became a minister. He was involved in uniting Presbyterians and Congregationalists into one unified body; however, the union didn't last very long. He survived the Great Plague and lived through the Glorious Revolution. He was implicated in a plot (known as the Rye House Plot) to assassinate the king. He provided shelter and protection to James Peirce, also known as the"Exeter heretic." Many of Mead's sermons and other works have been published. Mead died in 1699.
