Works by St. Augustine |
Confessions and Enchiridion, newly translated and edited by Albert C. Outler
Description: In The Confessions, Saint Augustine addressed himself eloquently and passionately to the enduring spiritual questions that have stirred the minds and hearts of thoughtful men since time began. Written A.D. 397, The Confessions are a history of the young Augustine's fierce struggle to overcome his profligate ways and achieve a life of spiritual grace.
Confessions of Saint Augustine
Description:
In his Confessions, Saint Augustine reflects upon his life in the light of scripture
and the presence of God. He begins with his infancy, pondering the many sins of his life
before his conversion, and he confesses not only his sins but even more the greatness of God.
This work presents a wonderful contrast between the Holy God who created all things and whom
heaven and earth cannot contain, and a commonly sinful man who has joyfully received God's
loving salvation and mercy.
Many scholars consider Saint Augustine to be among the greatest and most influential fathers
of the early church. And as you read his Confessions, you will find the confident
humility that is common among those whom Jesus calls "great in the kingdom of heaven."
Augustine writes as a common man, and so his words span time and tradition. May his
Confessions guide you to the One whom he confesses.
Handbook on Faith, Hope, and Love
Description:
Written after 420 C.E. to a man named Laurence, this wonderful book
by St. Augustine is a short treatise on the proper mode of worshipping
God.
Following 1 Corinthians 13, St. Augustine describes true worship of God
through faith, hope, and love. In thirty-three small chapters,
St. Augustine's description of true worship covers all the major ideas
of
the Christian religion, providing new and interesting insights on each
idea. Given that it was written less than a decade before he died,
St. Augustine's Handbook contains some of his most mature
reflections on Christian doctrines. Both those looking to understand
the proper mode of worshipping God and those just interested in a brief
encapsulation of St. Augustine's mature thought should look no further
than Handbook of Faith, Hope, and Love. It is beneficial for personal and theological study.

NPNF1-02. St. Augustine's City of God and Christian Doctrine (Author)
Description: With over twenty volumes, the Nicene and
Post-Nicene Fathers is a momentous achievement. Originally gathered
by
Philip Schaff, the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers is a collection
of
writings by classical and medieval Christian theologians. The purpose of
such a collection is to make their writings readily available. The
entire work is divided into two series. The first series focuses on two
classical Christian theologians--St. Augustine and St. John Chrysostom.
St. Augustine is one of the most influential and important Christian
thinkers of all time. In addition to reprinting his most popular two
works--the Confessions and the City of God--these volumes
also
contain
other noteworthy and important works of St. Augustine, such as On the
Holy Trinity, Christian Doctrine, and others. St. John
Chrysostom
was
an
eloquent speaker and well-loved Christian clergyman. St. John took a
more literal interpretation of Scripture, and much of his work focused
on practical aspects of Christianity, particularly what is now called
social justice. He advocated for the poor, and challenged abuses of
authority. This particular volume in the series contains Augustine's
City of God and On Christian Doctrine. The Nicene and
Post-Nicene
Fathers is comprehensive in scope, and provide keen translations of
instructive and illuminating texts from some of the greatest theologians
of the Christian church. These spiritually enlightening texts have aided
Christians for over a thousand years, and remain instructive and
fruitful even today!

On Christian Doctrine, in Four Books
Description: In On Christian Doctrine, St. Augustine
helps readers discover, teach, and defend the truths of
Scripture. According to St. Augustine, in order for
Christians to fully understand Scripture, it should be
interpreted with faith, hope, and love. St. Augustine
helps readers recognize and interpret figurative
expressions and ambiguous language. St. Augustine suggests that readers
consult original translations and commit difficult terms to memory. He
also suggests we familiarize ourselves with the meaning of frequently
used symbols, such as "shepherd" and "sheep." For those who teach the
Scripture to others, St. Augustine says we must teach in honesty--not
for self-seeking purposes. This text offers an impressive wealth of
practical wisdom for reading the Bible. It is evident that St. Augustine
earnestly wanted his readers to understand God's Word.
